Life Skills #2: What makes YOU tick? (Core Values)

I am a firm believer in navel-gazing.  Self-actualization, self-analysis, etc. (see also: reading list).  Getting in the groove of what you want, what you believe in, what gives you joy and what pisses you off.  And if that all sounds selfish or childish, I put to you this theory:  You cannot be happy with anyone else in this life until you are, if not HAPPY with yourself, at least working towards inner peace and happiness.  Knowing what you desire is half the battle of getting what you desire.  Figuring out who you are (and who you want to be) helps you make choices that support that future self.

Right now, I’m working with the amazing Erin Stutland, both with her Shrink Session workouts (genius, gorgeous, SO MUCH FUN), and doing her Magical Manifesters course (genius, gorgeous, SO MUCH FUN.  You sense a theme here with Erin.) . . . today our assignment was to determine our core values.  We were given a huge list of juicy words like “flow, freedom, integrity, recognition” (we could also add our own, of course), and asked to narrow them down to five words or phrases that described five core values–and then to flesh them out with a little brainstorming to get really specific.  And for the final part of the exercise, to share them with at least one person.  Well, here I am, sharing them with all of you.

I highly encourage all of you, lovely readers, to get yourself some space, light a candle or go outside and look at the sky, grab a cappuccino or a lovely glass of wine, take a deep breath, and examine what makes you tick!  If you feel so inspired, share your core values in the comment section–I’d love to hear from you!

My core values:

ABUNDANCE:  Wealth and fulfillment in ALL areas of my life: money, career, spirit, freedom, love.  Nourishment of self and others.  Knowing that I am enough and that I HAVE enough, just as I am, in the moment, so that I can better provide for myself and for others.  Releasing envy and comparison, because it’s unnecessary and unproductive. Rich in love.

CONNECTION:  Learning new things, bringing people to the table, friendship/relationships with integrity, love of family–biological and spiritual, see the good, foster the good, create the good, charity, passion, intimacy, truth, go into battle for what’s important, being present.

DAZZLE:  Sparkle, star-quality, radiance, drive, ambition, excellence.  Owning my own unique fire so that I can present it to the world with freedom instead of pushing it or forcing it.

DELIGHT:  Joy, lightness, humor, laugh it off and learn from it, pleasure in simple things, enthusiasm, adventure

INSPIRATION:  Ideas flowing, heart open, mind open, pick the ripe fruit, see the inner spark, in the flow, possibility, future focus, clarity, innovation.

I have a lot of pictures with my arms outstretched like this. I think it means I’m uninhibited.  (Anyone remember the Eddie Izzard sketch from Glorious about the Last Supper painting?  ”We can’t ALL do big arms!”)  (Photo credit:  Shawna Hamic
